October 30, 2024 - Garrett County with Chuck |
The incredible run of great aviation weather continues. Almost three weeks now. I've never experienced a run of almost perfect flying weather for this long. Chuck and I were headed to Garrett County Airport at the western end of Maryland this morning. It's right at the northern end of Deep Creek Lake. Chuck had the lead and took us on the southern side of the tall TV towers of west Baltimore, called TV Hill. It's been a long time since I went on this side of the towers. |
Chuck winging his way west. Sugar Loaf Mountain is visible in the distance, just to the lower left of Chuck's RV-7A.
Just passing Frederick, we are fighting a headwind.
A little town nestled in a bend on the Potomac River.
Ground fog as we approach Cumberland.
Cumberland comes into view at center. But the airport is underneath that layer of ground fog. Bad news if you need to land at Cumberland!
Cruising over the Appalachians at 4,500 feet. After flying through the Rockies and up in Alaska, I wouldn't even call these mountains. Foothills maybe.
On a long final at Garrett County Airport.
Getting closer. Looks like I'll be landing uphill. Chuck is already on the runway.
Safe on deck at Garrett County Airport. This is only the second time I've landed at this airport.

They have a very nice terminal building. They don't have a courtesy car but can you believe some nice gentleman lent us his rental car to go into town to get breakfast?
Perkins was only a couple of miles away where we had an outstanding big breakfast. Breakfast always tastes good after you've flown 136nm to get it!
From the Perkins parking lot we could see the Wisp ski resort. I skiied at Wisp last January.
Departing Garrett County Airport, we make the obligatory run over Deep Creek Lake. I have been to Deep Creek Lake many times, during both summer and winter. It's a nice place to go for a week and enjoy boating, hiking, skiing, horseback riding and relaxing.
Another look at the Wisp ski resort.
Cruising south down the lake.
We expected a nice tailwind on the ride home -- having endured the headwind flying west -- and we were not disappointed, making over 190 mph most of the way home. Back overhead Essex Skypark. |
Chuck on landing roll-out. Fun flying day!
